Monona Drive Reconstruction Plan:  Phase I, Broadway to Nichols

Construction work on Monona Drive (Broadway to Nichols Road) is anticipated to begin the first week of March, weather permitting.  Traffic will be transitioned to one lane northbound, one lane southbound, and a center two-way left turn lane on the existing easterly lanes of Monona Drive.  Click here for tips on navigating the two-way center turn lane.

The current phase of work (Stage 3) will include rubblizing the west traffic lanes, installing new water main and services, installing new sanitary sewer main, installing new road pavement, installing new street lights, and landscape restoration.  Stage 3 is anticipated to be completed by early July.  Stages 4 and 5 will be completed by mid November.

Utility crews will begin at Broadway and progress north to Frost Woods Road.  Then utility crews will move to Nichols Road and progress south to Frost Woods Road.

Check back for more detailed construction schedule updates once construction begins.

The construction of the improvements will be administered by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WISDOT).  The project leader for WISDOT is Jim Foley of Strand Associates.  Jim is on-site at all times for construction administration.  R.G. Huston Company of Cottage Grove is the general contractor for the project.  Periodic meetings with business owners along the project will be held to answer questions and provide information on construction activities.  If you have a question or concern about construction and or the scheduling of meetings, please call the field office at 608-222-2161 or click here to send an email to the contractor.

Construction Update Meetings for Local Business Owners

The project contractor will hold bi-weekly meetings to update business owners on the project, answer questions, and address concerns.  All business owners or representatives are invited to attend.  The next business owners meeting will be held on Monday, February 22, 2010 at 9 a.m. in the media room at the Monona Public Library.  Watch this site for the dates and times of future meetings or click here to email the contractor regarding the schedule for bi-weekly meetings.

Powerpoles to be Removed Along Monona Drive

In preparation for Monona Drive Improvements (Phase I), Madison Gas & Electric Company (MG&E) will begin removing the power poles along the west side of Monona Drive from Broadway to Nichols Road starting in the latter half of February, 2010.

This work needs to be completed prior to the start of street and utility construction activities tentatively scheduled for early March, 2010.

This temporary reduction in street lighting will be in effect until late spring, 2010, when, as part of the stage three project improvements, the permanent street lighting will be installed along the west side of Monona Drive.  Permanent street lighting along the east side of Monona Drive is part of stage four of the project improvements and is scheduled to be installed in late summer 2010.

Tips on Navigating the Two-Way Center Lane

During the construction process, Monona Drive will rely on a two-way left turn lane (TWLTL) to keep traffic moving.  Click here to download a document with everything you need to know about the TWLTL and how to safely use it.

Concerns with Tree Removal

During the design of the project, the City made efforts to save as many trees as possible.  Unfortunately, due to the widening of Monona Drive, approximately 175 trees will be removed.  Of this number, approximately 25 trees will be transplanted in various locations throughout Dane County.  The City of Monona, through this project, will be planting 245 deciduous trees, 3,239 deciduous shrubs, 67 evergreen shrubs, 1,967 perennials and 450 bulbs for a total of 5,968 new plantings.
