Monona Drive Reconstruction Plan: Phase I, Broadway to Nichols
The west side of the Drive, from Broadway to Nichols Rd., has been completed and traffic has been transitioned to the completed lanes with one lane northbound, one lane southbound, and a center two-way left turn lane on the existing easterly lanes of Monona Drive. Click here for tips on navigating the two-way center turn lane.

Current phase of work (Stage 4) will include rubblizing the east traffic lanes, installing new water main and services, installing new sanitary sewer main, installing new road pavement, installing new street lights, and landscape restoration. Stage 4 is anticipated to be completed by October, 2010.
Please continue to check back for more detailed construction schedule updates as construction continues.
The construction of the improvements will be administered by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WISDOT). The project leader for WISDOT is Jim Foley of Strand Associates. Jim is on-site at all times for construction administration. R.G. Huston Company of Cottage Grove is the general contractor for the project. Periodic meetings with business owners along the project will be held to answer questions and provide information on construction activities. If you have a question or concern about construction and or the scheduling of meetings, please call the field office at 608-222-2161 or click here to send an email to the contractor.
Construction Update Meetings for Local Business Owners
The project contractor will hold meetings on an "as needed" basis to update business owners on the project, answer questions, and address concerns. All business owners or representatives are invited to attend. Watch this site for information on any upcoming meetings.
Notes from past meetings and future meeting announcements can also be found at http://mononadrivesalive.com/. If you have questions about these meetings, click here to email the contractor.
Monona Drive's Alive! and Monona Moola
The Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with local business owners, is running the "Monona Drive's Alive" campaign to help promote local businesses during the reconstruction. This campaign includes the Monona Moola program which allows customers to spend $4 in real cash for $5 in Monona Moola cash which can be used at participating businesses. Visit their website at
http://mononadrivesalive.com/ or contact the Chamber of Commerce at
http://www.monona.com/ or 222-8565 for more information.
Monona State Bank has also developed a coupon flyer of more than 25 coupon offers from Monona Drive area businesses to help promote traffic to the areas affected by the reconstruction project. More than 300,000 copies were printed and distributed. If you didn't receive one, visit
www.mononabank.com to print a copy.
Monona Drive Facade Improvement Program
In conjuntion with the reconstruction of Monona Drive, the City of Monona is offering grant funding to Monona Drive property owners to invest in the building sites and facades. For more information on this program,
please click here, or call City Hall at 222-2525.
Tips on Navigating the Two-Way Center Lane

During the construction process, Monona Drive will rely on a two-way left turn lane (TWLTL) to keep traffic moving. Click
here to download a document with everything you need to know about the TWLTL and how to safely use it.
Concerns with Tree Removal
During the design of the project, the City made efforts to save as many trees as possible. Unfortunately, due to the widening of Monona Drive, approximately 175 trees will be removed. Of this number, approximately 25 trees will be transplanted in various locations throughout Dane County. The City of Monona, through this project, will be planting 245 deciduous trees, 3,239 deciduous shrubs, 67 evergreen shrubs, 1,967 perennials and 450 bulbs for a total of 5,968 new plantings.
