The City Engineer and Director of Public Works is responsible for the City's Public Works Department and Water and Sewer Utilities; for oversight of street reconstruction; rehabilitation of municipal facilities; and review of new development and redevelopment projects to ensure there will be adequate drainage, erosion control, water and sewer services, as well as road access to the property; they assist with preparing the five year capital improvements plan for Public Works.
The responsibilities of the Public Works Department fall into the following areas: streets, storm water management, parks, sewer utility and water utility.
Department employees sweep and patch streets; sand, salt and plow the streets; shovel City-owned sidewalks; trim and remove trees on municipal property; pick up brush and leaves; and clean out storm sewer drains as well as perform many storm sewer repairs.
The City contracts with a private hauler for sanitation services. Yardwaste is not included in curbside refuse collection. Residents who wish to dispose of yardwaste can do so at the drop off site at the Public Works Garage at 851 Femrite Drive. The City’s recycling program includes scrap paper/junk mail, printed material (newspapers and magazines), telephone books, plastic (No. 1 through No.7), glass, corrugated cardboard, noncorrugated cardboard, tin containers, aerosol cans, and aluminum. Department employees have many responsibilities related to the City parks. They mow grass and trim trees, repair shelter houses, clean park equipment, repair and paint picnic tables, install playground equipment, plow snow in the parks and put in and take out all City-owned piers. They also maintain the ice rink located west of Shelter No. 2.
