Energ!ze Monona: Families Go Green
On February 18 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., families can create art from recyclables, take quizzes, start seeds, see a model train, make buttons, test their smarts about how much energy household items use, compare transit options, and energize themselves at the Monona Public Library. The final Energ!ze Monona event in a series of six, “Families Go Green” is a family-friendly afternoon of fun that will engage young and old in activities designed to enlighten about energy.
Mayor Bob Miller will offer opening remarks to start off the festivities at 1:00. A brief Jeopardy-style game show presenting The Natural Step framework will follow. Then enjoy a variety of activity stations set up around the library, and get your Green Machine tickets stamped at each station. Energy information and thought-provoking questions for adults and children will go hand-in-hand with each fun activity.
Great door prizes include a $100 gift certificate from MG&E that the winner can apply to their utility bill, a tote bag from Willy Street Co-op filled with $100 worth of locally-produced goods, $85 of bicycle accessories from Machinery Row Bicycles, and a $50 gift certificate from Brothers Main Appliance and TV.
Energy meters will be available for check out, so you can see just how much energy your home appliances use.
Any South Central Library System library card may be used for the meters and to borrow books and other materials that will be on display.
This free event is hosted by the City of Monona, the Monona Public Library, and The Natural Step Monona. Beverages will be provided. Register at

This is the final Energ!ze Monona event in a series of six free City of Monona events created around the “25x25 Plan,” a blueprint for generating 25 percent of the energy the city uses from renewable resources by 2025. This plan came from Monona’s participation in the state Office of Energy Independence’s Energy Independent Communities program. (A short video overview of the program is here:
