This is the Monona News for the last week of July.
Our first story is a recap of last week's monona city council meeting. The big topic on the agenda was the proposed renovations to the entryway feature where monona drive meets the beltline. Ken Saiki Designs, the firm tasked to develop the renovation plans, presented a preliminary proposal that recommended updating the existing sail idea by improving the landscaping in the area and adding in lighting effects. The council liked the proposed upgrades to the site, however there was concern about the potential cost of the project, 300 thousand dollars. The council had initially allocated 160 thousand dollars to renovating the entryway, however the plan commission, which first took a look at the proposal, decided to get feedback from the council on the proposed 300k project. Mayor Kahl expressed concerned about the cost and agreed the city would not borrow any money to fund it, however he urged the council not to completely dismiss the proposal. [VIDEO] The council ending the discussion by agreeing that the plan commission should continue working with Ken Saiki Designs to create a scaled back version of the initial proposal. The other item to report from the city council meeting is the approval of the 2010 slurry seal program. A slurry seal is applied to a number of roads in monona each year in order to improve their condition and to prolong the life of the roadway. Here is a list of the streets that will get a slurry seal this year:

Monona residents should note the entire lake monona is now under a slow, no wake order. Heavy rains last week prompted Dane Co officials to issue the order last Friday, however the only lake effected is lake monona. Squaw bay is also under a slow, no wake order and both are expected to stay in place for a while. Lake Mendota, Monona and Waubesa all remain over the summer max, however lake monona is the highest of the three. Stay tuned to Monona Community Cable for continuing updates on slow, no wake orders and the water level of lake monona.
