The Monona Water Utility is warning customers about a billing scam.
The scammers call, email, or text customers to inform them that a new federal stimulus program passed by President Barack Obama can help customers pay their utility bills.
The scammers then ask customers for their personal information, including social security numbers and bank account numbers, and give customers fraudulent bank information to use to pay their bills online. These payments do not go to the Monona Water Utility and are not used to pay their utility bills.
The utility warns customers not to give personal information. Anyone who thinks they have been a victim of this scam should call the Wisconsin Consumer Protection hotline at 224-4953.
